Melanin is the pigment in skin caused from sun exposure and is actually the skins way of trying to protect itself from burning. 

Not only do UVA rays leave your skin looking bronzed, they also cause major, long lasting skin damage. This is because the UVA rays penetrate down into the dermis whereas UVB rays only affect the epidermis (which is why a tan lasts longer than a burn).
